ALVA

The luxury steel hulled yacht Alva was built and owned by Vanderbilt. She was 285 feet long had a 32 foot beam and displaced 1151 tons.

On July 24, 1892 the Alva was sitting at anchor in a fog when she was struck on her port side and sunk by the D. F. Dimock. According to Captain Eric Takakjian the wreck sits about 8 miles off Chatam in 50 feet of water on a white sand bottom. Eric reports that the wrecks hull is broken up and her bow lies on its port side. This wreck produces very ornate artifacts like square portholes and gold platted fittings. Divers should note the heavy current.
