ALBERT GALLATIN

The Iron hulled Revenue Cutter Gallatin was built in Buffalo NY in 1874. She was 142 feet long had a 23 foot beam and displaced 250 tons.

On January 6, 1892the Albert Gallatin was en-route from Portsmouth to Provincetown. The weather turned bad. With gale winds creating monstrous sea conditions the Gallatin's captain headed for the protection of Gloucester Harbor. Unfortunately, the Gallatin ran aground on Boo Hoo Ledge. Water began to pour in. The Gallatin rolled over. Capt Eric Gabrielson ordered the life boats to be lowered. As the boats were being lowered the ships carpenter was killed when her smoke stack broke free and struck him on his head. The rest of her crew boarded the boats safely and rowed to shore.

According to Bill Carter the remains of the Albert Gallatin can be found scattered in 15 to 50feet of water.
