USS YANKEE
The navy cruiser USS Yankee was built in Newport News in 1892. She
was originally named the El Norte. She was acquired by the Navy from
the Southern Pacific Company and commissioned on April 14, 1898. She
was 406 feet long had a 48.4 foot beam and displaced 6225 gross
tons. On August 23, 1908while serving as a training ship the Yankee
was caught in a dense fog. She ran aground on Spindle Rock off
Westport MA. In December of the same year she was pulled off the
rocks. Her reprieve however, was short lived. While being towed
en-route to New Bedford the Yankee sank in Buzzards Bay. Today the
Yankee sits in 55 feet of water in Buzzards Bay. According to Capt
Eric Takakjian the wreck has very little relief and is scattered.
Even though the wreck is low lying it still holds its shape. Eric
suggests divers use a reel for navigation on this site. Visibility
averages 3 to 5 feet. This is a very productive artifact wreck.
