HMCS ST FRANCIS
 The destroyer St Francis was launched as the USS Bancroft (DD-256)
in March of 1919. She was 314feet long had a 32 foot beam and
displaced 1060 gross tons. In 1940 she was decommissioned from the
US Navy and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy, and renamed St
Francis. On June 11, 1945 the St Francis was decommissioned and
striped of her armament.
On July 14, 1945 the ship was being towed to the scrap yard in
Philadelphia PA, when she collided with the SS Winding Gulf and sank
off Acoaxet, MA.
Today the wreck of the St Francis sits scattered and broken down in
60 feet of water. Although dynamited and heavily salvaged her
bow is relatively intact.
