SAGAMORE (MA)
The Sagamore was a four masted wood hulled schooner. She was built
in 1891 in Kennebunk, Maine. The Sagamore was 219 feet long and
displaced 1,415 gross tons.
According to Captain Eric Takakjian the Sagamore was sunk on May 10,
1907. At the time she wassailing east in Nantucket Sound with a full
load of coal. The Norwegian ship Edda was steaming west when the two
ships collided. The Sagamore was badly damaged and went down a short
time latter.
The remains of the Sagamore were recently discovered with the use of
a side scan sonar. The wreck lies scattered in 70 feet of
water. Captain Eric reports a large anchor on the wreck bow. He also
warns of strong currents so dives should be planned at slack tide.
