ROMANCE
The steel hulled excursion steamer Romance was built in 1898 in
Delaware. She was originally christened the Tennessee. She was 245
feet long had a 38 foot beam and displaced1240 gross tons.
On September 9, 1936while steaming in a dense fog the Romance was in
a collision with the liner New York. The New York almost cut the
Romance in half. The steamer sunk fast. Fortunately, no one was
killed in the accident.
Today the Romance sits in 85 feet of water two miles southeast of
East Point, Nahant. Bill Carter reports that her hull and machinery
remain but her wood deck houses floated free.
