RHODE ISLAND
The paddle wheel passenger steamship Rhode Island was built in 1872
in Greenport Long Island. She was 340 feet long had a 47 foot beam
and displaced 1000 tons.
On November 7, 1880the Rhode Island was en-route from New York to
Providence. She was steaming in a dense fog the Rhode Island smashed
into two huge rocks. The passengers and crew aboard were able to
climb off the vessel onto the rocks. They then watched as waves
smashed the once fine steamship in half.
Today the remains of the Rhode Island sit in 15 to 42 feet of water,
off Bonnet Point. According to Bill Carter the wreck is heavily
encrusted, broken and scattered.
