POTTSTOWN
The Pottstown was a schooner barge built in Baltimore in 1917. She
was 194.5 feet long had a 34.6foot beam and displaced 974 tons.
On November 17, 1944she was being towed by the tug boat Walthen.
Rough seas caused the Captain of the tug to anchor the barges. While
at anchor the Pottstown started to leak. Her crew tried to save the
barge but their efforts failed. The coast guard were able to rescue
her crew. In the meantime the tug Walthen got a cable caught in her
wheel. The tug eventually drifted ashore where she was smashed into
pieces by the relentless power of Mother Nature. As a side not the
crew of the Walthen were also rescued.
Today the Pottstown sits in 30 to 50 feet of water. Diver Bill
Carter reports that her deck and deckhouses were dynamited and hull
flattened. The Walthen lies just north of Sandwich Public Beach.
