PORT HUNTER
The Port Hunter was a320 foot steel hulled British freighter. On
November 2, 1918 the Port Hunter was en-route from Boston to New
York with a cargo of war supplies. While en-route the tugboat
Covington collided with the massive freighter. All efforts to save
her failed.
Today the Port Hunter sits in 25 to 85 feet of water.
According to Capt Eric Takakjian the Port Hunter sits intact and
upright on a sand slope. Base of her bow is at 65 feet. In her stern
divers can see her 5 inch deck gun.
Remember
penetration
into any shipwreck should only be done by those with proper
training, experience and
wreck diving equipment.
Scuba equipment like powerful
dive lights,
navigation reels,
dive knives
as well as redundant air supply like a
pony bottle
or
doubles are standard gear for wreck
divers.
Divers should plan to dive at
slack water due to strong currents. Eric also reports heavy boat
traffic in the area so divers should be aware of the hazard. The
wrecks boiler, engine and propeller were salvaged but divers who dig
on the wreck have recovered everything from clay pipes to gold
coins.
