PENDLETON
The steel hulled tanker Pendleton was built in 1944. She was 504
feet long had a 68.2 foot beam and displaced 10,448 tons.
On February 17, 1952broken in two by heavy seas. The bow section
still holding eight crew members drifted ashore at Pollock Rip. All
eight men aboard the bow were drowned while trying to get to shore
in the monstrous seas. The stern half stayed adrift. The Coast Guard
succeeded in getting a 36 foot boat out the inlet. With great skill
the Coast Guard rescued 36 men from the still floating stern
section.
According to diver Bill Carter the wreck is in 30 feet of water.
Bill has recovered her capstan and portholes from the site.
