MARY ARNOLD
The 70 foot Mary Arnold was a wood hulled tugboat. On November 23,
1940 she was en-route from Greenwich CT to Riverside RI and towing
two barges. One of the barges was a lighter and the other a dredge
called Progress. While navigating through a story sea the Progress
started to leak. The barge eventually capsized throwing her crew
into the frigid water. The Mary Arnold turned to rescue the men.
They were successful in retrieving three of the four men from the
sea. Unfortunately, the tug had also hit the Progress and was now
also leaking. Only a short time latter the men had to once again
abandon ship. This time onto the only barge still afloat.
Today the Mary Arnold can be found scattered in 55 feet of water.
The barge Progress sits only 100yards away.
