KIOWA
The steel hulled freighter Kiowa was built in Philadelphia, PA in
1903 She was 291 feet long had a 43 foot beam and displaced 2949
gross tons.
On December 26, 1903the Kiowa was en-route from Charleston SC. to
Boston. She was plowing through heavy seas. Her captain thought it
was unsafe to navigate into the harbor in the blinding snow so he
ordered the Kiowa's anchor dropped. Meanwhile the out bound
steamship Admiral Dewey steamed steadily toward them. The resulting
collision resulted in a massive hole in the Kiowa's side. All of the
Kiowa's crew were transferred a tugboat that had heard its distress
calls. The Kiowa sank in 45feet of water. The wreck was dynamited so
as not to be a hazard to navigation.
Today the Kiowa's low lying scattered remains provide a home to
lobsters and a great site for local divers.
