HERBERT (MA)
The steam powered wood hulled lighter Herbert was built in Noank CT
in 1910 She was 128 feet long and had a 30 foot beam and displaced
349 tons.
On August 7, 1924 the Herbert was en-route from Boston to Ipswich,
MA in a dense fog. The steamer City of Glousester suddenly appeared
out of the fog and crashed into the Herbert. The Herbert went down
in 20 minutes. All of her crew were rescued.
Today the remains of the Herbert sit in 105 feet of water in Mass
Bay. According to diver Bill Carter the wrecks boilers, engine and
forward winch are still standing but her wood hull is flattened.
