USS G-1 Submarine Wreck
The US submarine G-1was laid down on February 2, 1909. She was
commissioned on October 28, 1912.She was 161 feet long had a 13.1
foot beam and displaced 400 tons The G-1 could dive to 250 feet. The
submarine was decommissioned on March 6, 1920.
On June 21, 1921 theG-1 was used as a target for an experimental
depth charge attack. She was sunk by the destroyer Grebe with depth
charges, after eight experimental bomb attacks, in Narragansett Bay.
The Navy abandoned the wreck on August 26, 1921.In 1962 the wreck
was located and heavily salvaged.
Today what little remains of her wreckage is broken up and scattered
across the bottom in 105feet of water. Diver Bill Carter reports
scattered steel a mud bottom, black water and heavy current.
