EMPIRE STATE
The paddle wheel passenger steamer Empire State was built in New
York in 1848. She was 317 feet long had a 79 foot beam and displaced
1600 tons. She was originally named the Plymouth Rock.
On January 13, 1849the Empire State caught fire and sunk at her dock
in Fall River. The vessel was raised and after extensive repairs was
put back into service. In 1857 the Empire State sunk once again in
the Hudson River. Again she was re-floated repaired and put back
into service.
On May 14, 1887 while sitting at her dock in Bristol CT the Empire
Knight caught fire once again. This time the charred hulk could not
be saved. Her engine and some fittings were salvaged but her hull
was left. Today the remains of the Empire State can be found just
off Independence Park in Bristol Harbor. She sits in 20 feet of
water.
