DELAWARE (MA)
The iron hulled schooner barge Delaware was 318.4 feet long had a
35.6 foot beam and displaced2461 gross tons. She was built in
1873in Scotland.
On November 27, 1898during a severe blizzard the Delaware was under
tow by the tugboat Mars. She was en-route from Newport News to
Boston with a cargo of coal. The tug was having extreme problems due
to increasing seas. Her captain ordered the barges to drop anchor.
Shortly after a massive wave crashed over the tug. The wave smashed
her pilot house and flooded the tug. Fortunately, the Mars survived.
The two barges including the Delaware did not. Both went down taking
their crews to a watery grave.
Today the Delawares scattered remains can be found in 40 to 70 feet
of water. According to Capt Eric Takakjian the wreck sits amongst a
boulder field. Her bow is intact and provides 25 feet of relief. The
rest of the wreck is flatted out. Average visibility on the site
ranges from 10-15 feet. This wreck is known for the huge dead eyes
which divers have recovered.
