CHELSEA
The steel hulled coastal tanker Chelsea was 170 feet long had a 30
foot beam and displaced 556 gross tons. She was built in 1919 for
Texaco and originally named Texaco 145. On February 10, 1957the
Chelsea ran aground off Rockport MA. At the time she was en-route
from Boston to New Hampshire with a cargo of fuel oil. After
considerable effort the Coast Guard was able to pull the Chelsea off
the rocks. Now adrift the Chelsea drifted to the lee side of Straits
mouth Island where the Coast Guard managed to get two tow lines on
her. Apparently, the Chelsea had greater damage then originally
thought. While under tow the tanker capsized and slipped beneath the
waves. Both tow lines had to be axed so that the Cutter Evergreen
would not be carried down with her. Divers will find the Chelsea in
45 to 60 feet of water. According to diver Bill Carter her bow
section is intact. Amidships and stern are scattered. This wreck is
also known as the Hollywood Wreck. |
