Aransas Shipwreck
The
Aransas was a 241 ft passenger steamer. She was owned by the Joy
Line and displaced 1156 gross tons. The Aransas was built in 1878
and sunk due to collision with the schooner barge Glendower, on May
7th 1905. The wreck was wire dragged and blow up to prevent a hazard
to navigation. Today this shipwreck sits in only 65 feet of water
off Chatham, MA. Although shallow strong currents make this wreck
for experienced divers only. According to
Chris Combs from JW Fishers Mfg (see link
below). "The current
really smokes".
