WASHINGTONIAN

The steam powered freighter Washingtonian was built in 1914. She was 408 feet long had a 52 foot beam and displaced 6650 gross tons. On January 26, 1915the Washingtonian was in a collision with the wood schooner Elizabeth Palmer. The Palmer had hit the Washingtonian on her starboard side creating a huge hole. The big steamer went down fast. Fortunately, all of her crew escaped on lifeboats. Today the twisted remains of the Washingtonian lies upside down in 90 feet of water.
