SAN GIL
 The steam powered freighter San Gil was built in 1920. She was 325
feet long had a 46 foot beam and displaced 3627 gross tons. On
February 4, 1942the San Gil was torpedoed by the U-103. Two were
killed in the initial explosion. Her crew quickly launched lift
boats. The U-boat waited until all the life boats were cleared then
finished off the San Gill with her deck gun. Today the wreck of the
San Gil sits in 130 feet of water. Divers can still recognize her
boilers, engine and propeller shaft.
Remember
penetration
into any shipwreck should only be done by those with proper
training, experience and
wreck diving equipment.
Scuba equipment like powerful
dive lights,
navigation reels,
dive knives
as well as redundant air supply like a
pony bottle
or
doubles are standard gear for wreck
divers.
