SIMPSON Panama City
The little tug boat Simpson was sunk off the Emerald Coast while
trying to pull free a grounded fishing vessel on October 28, 1929.
Apparently, while the tug was trying to pull the fishing vessel
free, a wave crashed over the Simpson, causing her to lose power.
Her crew abandoned ship safely, but by the next morning, the Simpson
had capsized and sunk.
The Simpson is nice not only for fish watchers but for artifact
hunters as well. The Simpson's wreckage is scattered in 18 feet of
water, but divers will recognize her boiler and bulkhead. According
to diver Mark Elliott, her boiler stands straight up, and much of
the wreck was uncovered during a hurricane in 1985. At low tide this
wreck's smokestack protrudes up to within a few feet of the ocean's
surface.
