SAN PABLO
Pensacola
The San Pablo was built in Belfast, Ireland, in 1915, and was owned
by United Fruit Company. The San Pablo was torpedoed and sunk by the
U-161 on July 3, 1942, while she was tied up at berth at Puerto
Limon, Costa Rica. She was re-floated on January 9, 1943, and towed
to Tampa for repairs. She was then declared a "constructive total
loss" for insurance reasons. In September of 1943, the U.S. Maritime
Commission War Shipping Administration, acquired title and
simultaneously transferred the San Pablo to the U.S. Army. After
1943 we can find no further information on the vessel. One article
suggests that she was sunk by the Army, while others say she was
sunk while in tow. While researching information for this book, we
were given a historical photograph of the San Pablo by Gene
Ferguson. The photo reads, "San Pablo re-sink 1943." This is the
only document we know of that records this vessels second sinking.
Today, the San Pablo also known as the Russian Freighter wreck, sits
in 80 feet of water nine mile off Pensacola Beach. Her stern is
still intact on its port side, her bow is upright and her boilers
are still recognizable amongst her scattered wreckage. Visibility
here ranges from 20 to 80 feet.
