JOSEPH L. MEEK Pensacola

The 480 foot long Liberty ship Joseph L. Meek was built in 1942 by the Oregon War Industries Ship Building Company in Portland, Oregon. She was built for the Maritime Commission for operating under the U.S. war shipping administration. Her keel was laid on October 20, and she was launched on November 16, 1942, and was delivered to the Alaska Steamship Company on November 26, 1942. In 1946, the Meek was laid up in the James River Reserve fleet. In June of 1976, she was withdrawn from the reserves and had her superstructure removed. She was sunk on November 5, 1976, as an artificial reef by the Department of Commerce. She now rests in 80 feet of water seven miles out of Pensacola Bay.
