BENJAMIN H. GRIERSON Panama City

The liberty ship Benjamin H. Grierson was built in 1943 by the Oregon Ship Building Corporation in Portland, Oregon. Her keel was laid on February 24, and she was launched on March 17, 1943. She was 441 feet long, had a 57 foot beam and displaced 7,716 gross tons. On November 28, 1949, she was laid up in the Mobile Reserve Fleet in the Tensaw River near Mobile, Alabama. On September 29, 1977, the Florida Department of Natural Resources sunk the vessel as an artificial reef. Today, the Grierson which is also commonly called the Liberty Ship sits in 75 feet of water seven and a half miles out of the St. Andrew's jetties.
