ULTRA FREEZE Key
Biscayne
The
Ultra Freeze was built in 1959 by J.J Sietas Schiffswerft in
Hamburg. She was owned by Trans Caribbean Lines and managed by Trans
Caribbean Agencies Inc. of Miami. She was 207 feet long, had a 30
foot beam, and displaced 852 gross tons. The Ultra Freeze was
originally built as the Herbert Horn, but she was renamed Mary B in
1968 and Ultra Freeze in 1970.
While on the Miami River she was abandoned, vandalized and slowly
stripped until she was worthless. Lloyd's of London reports that she
was scuttled on July 5, 1984. The steel hulled Ultra Freeze now
rests in the Miami area in 118 to 131 feet of water and rises to
within 70 feet of the surface. The wreck sits on a slope with her
stern facing west. Mike Lawrence reports that she sits intact and
upright and that her stern has an amazing amount of marine growth.
The wreck's propeller is always a good photo background.
