TE AMO Ft. Lauderdale
The Te Amo was a 100 foot wooden racing sailboat, launched on New
Years Day, 1925. The Te Amo did a lot of world racing and was a
beautiful vessel. She was sunk off Ft. Lauderdale on May 16, 1985,
to form an artificial reef. Some sources list a 63 foot ferro cement
yacht named Stardancer as being sunk on the same site. According to
Steve Somerville, the Stardancer never really became a yacht. She
was built as a floating dance hall. The builder dug a hole in the
ground, built some supports and poured cement into it. He lifted the
swimming pool like hull out and broke it. The hull was then donated
as reef material. Both wrecks rest in 215 feet of water. Due to the
depth, this reef is much more popular as a fishing site than it is
for divers.
