RIO MIAMI Miami
The Rio Miami is a 105 foot long steel ocean going tug . She was
sunk as an artificial reef on November 28, 1989, and now lies in the
Key Biscayne reef area in 65 feet of water. Her sinking was featured
on the popular ABC television show 20/20. Hugh Downs, who hosted the
show, was given the honor of activating the detonator that set off
the explosives that sunk the ship. The Rio Miami went down in one
minute. Hugh was also the first diver to visit the new wreck on the
following day. Today, the Rio Miami sits in 63 feet of water with a
starboard list and has already developed into a spectacular
artificial reef.
