OWENS Riviera Beach
This 125 foot freighter was built in England in 1941 and originally
named Eidsvag. She was confiscated by the Coast Guard as a drug ship
and sunk in 1985 as an artificial reef in 80 feet of water. She was
renamed after the county commissioner and is now called Owens. Large
holes were blown into the hull of the ship prior to her sinking, so
divers can enter and exit the vessel through these holes in order to
explore her.
Although this is a fairly new shipwreck, large amounts of algae,
gorgonias and coral have already begun to thrive on the wreckage.
