ORION Miami
Originally named the Trinada when built in 1928 for the Panama Canal
Company, this tug was brought to Miami in the 1970's and used as a
diesel mechanics school. She was sunk in December of 1981 as part of
the Key Biscayne Artificial Reef Program. The Orion is now one of
Miami's most frequented dive sites.
This 120 foot steel tug sits upright and intact in 95 feet of water
with a slight starboard tilt. The Orion's ten foot propeller and
twin sets of engines have remained intact, while her stacks rise 30
feet, her intact wheel house and superstructure make this wreck a
great site for underwater photography. Photographer, Mike Lawrence,
tells us that the Orion's wheel house and smokestack are starting to
collapse.
