The U.S.S. Muliphen, AKA-61 was commissioned in 1944 as a type C-2 cargo vessel. She was launched on August 26, 1944. She was 459.2 feet long, had a 63 foot beam and displaced 7,360 tons. The Muliphen participated in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa invasions during World War II and carried occupation troops to Japan from the Philippines. The Muliphen received two battle stars for her World War II service. The once fine vessel was sunk as an artificial reef off St. Lucie in January of 1989 by the Sport Fishing Club and now sits in 168 feet of water, 16.5 miles offshore.
