MANDALAY Key Biscayne
The Mandalay was a 128 foot steel schooner. While en route from a
ten day Bahamas cruise on New Years Day, with all 23 passengers and
crew sound asleep, the Mandalay went hard aground at 3:00 AM. Heavy
seas almost capsized her as the Coast Guard helicopters rushed to
the scene where fortunately all passengers and crew were rescued.
The wreck remained hard aground, and with tug boats on the way,
looters stripped her clean. When the tugs finally arrived, they
tried to pull her off but only succeeded in opening some of the
ship's seams which caused water to rush into her lower compartments.
Today, the Mandalay is considered to be one of the best wreck dives
in Biscayne National Park. She sits in ten feet of water on Long
Reef.
