U.S.S. LAUDERDALE
Broward County
The assault transport U.S.S. Lauderdale, APA-179 was built by the
Oregon Shipbuilding Company in Portland, Oregon. She was 455 feet
long, had a 62 foot beam and a 24 foot draft. She was launched on
November 23, and commissioned on December 12, 1944. In April of
1945, she arrived at Okinawa where she assumed the duties of a
receiving ship for survivors of vessels destroyed in action. The
Lauderdale remained undamaged at Okinawa for three months, even
though other ships in her immediate vicinity were sunk. The biggest
threat had been from Kamikaze attacks, but the Lauderdale's gunners
had been successful in warding them off. She embarked survivors from
more than 30 ships and landing craft and served as a detention ship
for captured Japanese prisoners of war. The Lauderdale served as a
transport until 1946 when she was decommissioned. She had earned one
battle star for her World War II service.
