CRUZ DEL SUR Dade County
The Cruz Del Sur was a 258 foot German freighter built in Kel,
Germany, 1956. Her original name was Tronstad, and she was
registered in Georgetown, Cayman Islands. Later she was renamed Eva
before sailing under the name Cruz Del Sur. The Cruz Del Sur was
seized by the Coast Guard because she had an illegal hidden storage
compartment used to smuggle drugs. The vessel cost $40,000 to
purchase, clean and sink. She was sunk as a joint project between
Metro Dade County and the Broward County Artificial Reef Program on
December 19, 1986. According to Captain Joel Auerbach, she lies in
240 feet of water and comes to within 145 feet of the ocean's
surface.
