ALMIRANTE Miami
The Almirante was built as the H.M.S. Gillstone in 1943, by Cochrane
& Sons, Ltd., Selby, United Kingdom. She was 185 feet long, had a 29
foot beam and displaced 498 gross tons. In 1946 she was sold to
Norwegian owners and in 1952 she was converted to a refrigerated
cargo ship. She sailed under several names including Sea Enterprise,
Glenrock, Freedom First and Argo before being renamed Almirante. She
was sunk as an artificial reef in April of 1974. The Almirante now
sits upright in 135 feet of water a few miles off the northern tip
of Elliot Key. The top deck of this vessel can be reached by divers
at 110 feet. Covered with brilliant corals, the Almirante is known
to be the most colorful of the Miami shipwrecks.
Jacks, barracuda and jew fish are just some of the sea creatures
known to frequent this wreck, and visibility is often better than
100 feet.
