ALICIA Biscayne Park
The Spanish freighter Alicia was built in 1883 by London and Glasgow
Engine & Iron Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Glasgow. She was owned by
Linea de Vapores Serra, Bilbao, and was powered by a single 291 nhp
compound steam engine. The Alicia was launched in October of 1883
and was christened by Mrs. Goodwin of Liverpool. She was 345.5 feet
long, had a 37 foot beam and displaced 2,795 gross tons. She was
powered by 300 nhp compound surface condensing engines.
The Alicia went aground on Long Reef off Elliott's Key on April 21,
1905. At the time she was en route from Liverpool to Havana.
Salvagers raised her off the reef, but a strong gale succeeded in
blowing her back on, this time smashing a huge hole into her hull.
The Alicia had carried a cargo of furniture and trade goods.
Although early salvagers did recover a vast amount of her cargo,
divers will still find a variety of bottles on the site. The Alicia,
often misspelled Alecia, lies in 20 feet of water. This wreck has
collapsed but still lies roughly in a straight line.
