U-2513 Key West
The U-2513 was a 1600 ton, 252 foot long type XXI Germane submarine.
This submarine had six bow torpedo tubes and carried 23 torpedoes.
She also had a hydraulic torpedo loader which automatically loaded
all six tubes in under twelve minutes. She was built by Blohm & Voss
at Hamburg in 1944. She was powered by a diesel engine and had a 15
knot surface speed. This was the most advanced submarine Germany had
ever produced. The U-2513 could stay submerged for eleven days at a
time.
The war ended before the U-2513 had made any war cruises. She was
surrendered to the allies in May of 1945 at Horten, Norway. The
submarine was then given to the United States for design evaluation.
On October 7, 1951, after she was no longer of use to the Navy, she
was towed 23 miles northwest of the Dry Tortugas where the Navy
destroyer Robert Owens sank her as part of a firing test.
Today the sub rests with a starboard list in 214 feet of water, 95
miles off Key West. Hedge hogs can still be seen scattered in the
sand around the wreck.
Remember
penetration
into any shipwreck should only be done by those with proper
training, experience and
wreck diving equipment.
Scuba equipment like powerful
dive lights,
navigation reels,
dive knives
as well as redundant air supply like a
pony bottle
or
doubles are standard gear for wreck
divers.
