TONAWANDA Key Largo
The Tonawanda was built in 1863 by William Cramp and Sons in
Philadelphia. Before being completed, she was purchased by the Union
Navy on June 27, 1863, and converted to the Union Steamer Arkansas.
She was 191 feet long, had a 35 foot beam and displaced 752 tons.
The Arkansas was barkentine rigged and was pushed by a single screw
vertical low pressure engine to a top speed of 15 knots. Her
armament consisted of four 32-pound, one 20-pound, and one 12-pound
muzzling loading rifles. She was commissioned on September 5, 1863,
with Lieutenant D. Cate in command. The Arkansas served as a tug and
transport in the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, and she was even
credited as capturing one prize, the Watchful, on September 27,
1864. She was decommissioned on June 30, 1865, and sold on July 20
of the same year.
On August 1, 1865, she was re-documented Tonawanda. On May 28, 1866,
the propeller steamer Tonawanda stranded on Grecian Shoals. This
wreck's name is commonly misspelled Towanda and is one of the four
wrecks sunk within The Elbow, a reef structure that juts out into
the Gulfstream. From the early sailing days, this reef has claimed
many ships. Along with the Tonawanda, divers will find the
City Of
Washington and Civil War Wreck in the same area.
