RHEIN HAMBURG Dry
Tortugas
The German Merchant vessel Rhein Hamburg was built for the Hamburg
American lines in 1926. She was 453.8 feet long, had a 58.2 foot
beam and displaced 6,031 gross tons.
At the out break of World War II, the Rhein was caught in Mexico. On
December 11, 1940, while trying to make a run for Germany, the Rhein
was intercepted by the Dutch Navy sloop Van Kinsbergen. There was no
chance for the Rhein to out run the faster sloop, so her master set
fire to the ship in an effort to scuttle her. Before the Rhein could
sink, the British cruiser Caradoc finished her off with her six inch
deck guns.
In June of 1991, Captain Billy Deans of Key West Divers ran a five
day expedition to recover the ship's bell from the then unidentified
wreck. Billy told us that his friend Don Demaria had located the
wreck a full year earlier, but because the vessel lay in 250 feet of
water, the dive team had to make extensive preparations and plans
for the deep water recovery. Billy's seven member team used a
special mixture of gas to breath. They cut the bell from the wreck
with an underwater torch and filmed and photographed the entire
operation for documentation. It was not until the bell was raised
and cleaned that the name Rhein Hamburg appeared. Billy's team had
positively identified the wreck. Billy called to inform us of the
recent discovery and in turn we contacted marine historian Bill
Schell who was responsible for researching her history.
