IGNACIO Grassy Key
The merchant nao Ignacio, like the wreck of the San Pedro, is also
one of the fleet of 22 ships that set sail for Spain from Havana on
July 13, 1733. The Ignacio was English built and displaced 292 tons.
On September 15, 1733, while carrying a cargo of 12,000 pesos in
silver specie and bullion, 696 marcos of worked silver, boxes
containing gifts from China as well as a general cargo, the Ignacio
encountered a fierce storm and was driven over Collins Patch Reef,
where she sunk and rests today. The bottom of the Ignacio broke
open, and today her contents are scattered over hundreds of yards of
grassy flats near Coffin Patch.
