HERRERA Upper Matecumbe
Key
Located in the upper keys on a grass sea bed are the remains of the
Herrera. Time has reduced this wreckage to only a ballast pile. The
Herrera was one of 22 ships carrying a total of 20,000,000 pesos in
Mexican silver under the command of General de Torres sailing from
Havana. Although on July 14, Captain Torres sensed the danger of a
hurricane and ordered his ships to change course, his effort was
made too late. The hurricane that was so feared by the fleet gained
on the ships and sent the whole armada westward against the Florida
Keys. The merchant nao Herrera was stranded on the inshore edge of
Hawk Channel on July 15, 1733.
Today the Herrera sits in 18 feet of water, two and a half miles
south of Snake Creek Bridge in Hawks Channel. Among the items
recovered from this wreck are cannon balls, pottery shards, clay
bowls, animal hides and hundreds of small clay animals; hence the
wreck is also known as the Figurine Wreck.
