GUNVOR Key West
The true identity of the wreck known locally as the Gumbar or Gumbor
is the Norwegian steamship Gunvor. The Gunvor was built in 1935 by
Trondhjems Mek Verksted of Trondheim and owned by Bachke & Co. She
was 277.7 feet long, had a 43.2 foot beam, displaced 1,942 gross
tons and was powered by a 214 nhp double compound steam engine with
low pressure exhaust turbine. Sources say the Gunvor was on a voyage
from Mobile to Trinidad with a general cargo when she was lost in a
U.S. mine field on June 15, 1942. Others claim she was sunk on June
10, due to a torpedo attack from a German submarine, but after
careful research, we feel confident that this ship was sunk by a
U.S. mine.
Marine life at the wreck site, which is also known as the Danish
Freighter, abounds. Depth to the sand is 60 feet, and the wreck
rises to within 40 feet of the surface. Billy Deans reports that the
wreck is scattered but lies east to west.
