EL POPULO Pennekamp Park
The El Populo is also one of the famous 1733 fleet wrecks. This
wreck site was discovered in September of 1966 when a cannon and a
large ballast pile were found. One of the first artifacts recovered
was a small bronze cannon. The cannon's markings were used to
confirm that the wreck site was actually the El Populo. As the
salvage divers continued to work the site, they found hundreds of
cannon balls and grape shot. According to the book, FAMOUS
SHIPWRECKS OF THE FLORIDA KEYS, by Bob Weller, the wreck was
nicknamed Cannon Ball Wreck. The team worked the site for two years
and recovered a good assortment of artifacts. Unfortunately, the El
Populo had no registered treasure, but one Pillar Dollar was
recovered.
