EL CAPATAN Plantation
Key
The El Capitan, formally named Capitana Rubi Segundo, was one of the
22 ships sailing from Cuba to Europe when a hurricane wrecked the
fleet in 1733. It was not until 1948 that Reggie Roberts spotted the
wreck while running a charter boat. Art McKee, who pioneered modern
underwater treasure hunting, worked the wreck through the 1950's. In
those days the wreck was known as McKee's Galleon. Salvagers
recovered thousands of coins, jewelry, pewter plates, clay pottery,
swords, cannons, and cannon balls. Over the years, everyone from the
original Spanish salvage operation which used native free divers, to
pirates and modern day treasure hunters have salvaged this site.

Today all that remains are a few cannon and ballast stones. The site
ranges in depth from 15 to 30 feet of water and is located four
miles southeast of Plantation Key.
