ANGUSTIAS Long Key
The Nuestra Senora Las Angustias was one of 21 ships that set sail
from Havana to Cadiz, Spain on July 13, 1733. The fleet was
transporting treasure from the new world when the ships were caught
in a hurricane. The Angustias, under the command of Francisco
Sanchez Madrid, was pounded by 20 foot waves until she finally sunk
near Long Key. It was not until 1971 that the Angustias resting
place was discovered. Jack Haskings and Richard MacAllaster had done
extensive research and found the treasure galleon. The ballast pile
of the Angustias is 95 feet long and four feet high.
