ALEXANDER'S WRECK Key
West
The Alexander was a 300 foot long destroyer escort. She was
purchased by Chet Alexander for $2,000. She was sunk in the Gulf in
1972 as an artificial reef and dive site and is now sitting upright
and broken in half in 35 to 40 feet of water. Her stern section lies
150 yards north of her bow.
According to diver Joel Silverstein, she is almost exposed at low
tide, and divers can still see her five inch gun and 40 mm
anti-aircraft guns. This wreck is encrusted with coral and marine
life and still produces an occasional naval artifact.
